SAP can't handle Configuration Management (CMII)in our aerospace company! I have just had our SAP guru visit me, with the aim of showing me how to use SAP to store our Training reference documents, so that staff have "Read Only" rights to these documents. I started the visit by going over the way we use CMII methodology in Training production, and how we are currently using our Learning Content Management System (LCMS) to store and display CM documents that comply with CMII methodology. I had been advised some months ago that SAP was our company-wide management database, therefore I should look to use SAP to store all our documents. The SAP guru then began to show me how to store reference documents in SAP, but quite early on realised that as our SAP was designed specifically for use within our aerospace company, unless the training related to a specific aircraft type, which our company produces, I could not put documents into our SAP database. As most of the training for which we produce courseware does not even relate to aircraft, it was decided that it was impractical to think about using SAP for CMII purposes. Evidently our customized version of SAP is referred to as Extended-SAP, and to get it to accept none aircraft related documents would cost a fortune, so it was decided that it would be best if we continue to use our LCMS to hold the reference documents, rather than put them into SAP.
